Family Portraits at Tempe Town Lake

Recently, I had a family portrait session with Tabitha Morris and her sweet family at Tempe Town Lake. Tabitha always has such a warm and considerate personality which makes her so easy to work with on her family portraits! We chose Tempe Town Lake for it’s modern, urban look as well as it being conveniently close to us.

Tabitha won our most recent family portrait raffle for a free session (follow my Instagram @andrewmillettphoto for upcoming raffles!). It was great to work with her and her family on another session. Previously, I had done portraits to celebrate her daughter’s baptism into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I messaged her through Facebook Messenger to re-connect and set up a time to shoot. I asked her what days worked best for her about an hour before sunset (at this time of year, an hour before sunset is about 5:15pm) before setting up a date for her session.

The Tempe Center for the Arts has many great background options around it. There’s an infinity pool that makes a nice, long waterfall along the walking pathway by Tempe Town Lake. There’s also a large, unique bridge above the lake. Finally, there are large colorful, artistic, and glass walls along the back of the building. If we had a longer session, we could walk east toward the park at Tempe Town Lake and shoot under the rail road tracks by the road and a couple other spots in that area as well.

Beginning the Family Portrait Session at Tempe Town Lake

We parked a little east of the Tempe Center for the Arts. It was a perfect day; we didn’t have much wind, it wasn’t too hot or too cold, and the three kids were in a happy, playful mood. I started by introducing myself to Kevin, the father, and the three kids, Keegan, Rhett, and Mason before posing them in front of the long waterfall spot.

The family was all smiles and so much fun together. To save time and use the golden hour time most efficiently, we used the backgrounds in that area since there are many to choose from. Check out the images we created together in the gallery below!
